The school gates close with one last cheer,
"The summer holidays are here!"
My backpack's packed away to rest,
Now every day is simply the best.
I chase bright butterflies through flowers,
And spend outside such happy hours.
I zoom my scooter down the lane,
Then race back home and out again.
We picnic underneath the trees,
With juicy fruit and gentle breeze.
The birds all sing a merry song,
Inviting everyone along.
We visit farms and feed the sheep,
Where sleepy piglets snore and sleep.
I wave at horses, ducks and goats,
And giggle at their funny coats.
Ice cream melts upon my nose,
Sticky fingers, sandy toes!
We hunt for shells beside the sea,
Each one a tiny mystery.
I help to bake some yummy treats,
Mixing cakes and sugary sweets.
Then proudly lick the mixing spoon,
While humming my own summer tune.
We read our stories every night,
Of dragons, fairies, stars so bright.
Then cuddle close before I sleep,
With happy dreams I'll always keep.
Soon nursery doors will open wide,
With friendly teachers by my side.
I'll bring my smile, my songs, my fun,
And tell of all that I have done.
So here's to holidays full of play,
Learning, laughing every day.
With muddy boots and hearts so light,
Summer memories sparkle bright!

This autumn Hertfordshire Libraries are encouraging all Reception children to have their own library card. Our special ‘My First Library Adventure’ promotion gives your child the chance to win one of 50 personalised signed books by author-illustrator Ged Adamson (‘The Elephant Detectives’). Plus two children will win a special library visit with Ged Adamson for their whole class!
It’s easy for your child to take part. They just need to visit a Hertfordshire Library* twice by 21 December 2025 with their special ‘My First Library Adventure’ bookmark which they were given at school. For each step of the Adventure they will collect a sticker to celebrate their progress.
(*Please visit Hemel Hempstead Library as Leverstock Green Community Library is not taking part in the promotion).

There is an app for families in Hertfordshire! It’s called ’50 Things to do before you’re five‘, it’s intention is to improve outcomes for our younger children. It’s full of ideas for activities and experiences that are free or low cost that encourage communication and language, being active and trying new things. Many experiences are outdoors and open ended so the whole family can take part!
How many experiences and memories can you tick off?
