  1. There was nothing the innkeeper liked more
  1. L’aubergiste n’aimait rien de plus
  1. than a good night’s sleep.
  1. qu’une bonne nuit de sommeil.
  1. But that night, there was a knock at the door.
  1. ‘No room,’ said the innkeeper.
  1. ‘Pas de place,’ l’aubergiste a dit.
  1. ‘But we’re tired and have travelled through night and day.’
  1. ‘Mais on est fatigués et on a voyagé la journée et la nuit.’
  1. ‘There’s only the stable round the back. Here’s two blankets. Sign the register.’
  1. ‘Je n’ai que mon écurie. Voici deux couvertures. Signez le registre.’
  1. So they signed it: Mary and Joseph.
  1. Then he shut the door,
  1. Puis il a fermé la porte,
  1. Climbed the stairs, got into bed and went to sleep.
  1. But then, later, there was another knock at the door.
  1. ‘Excuse me. I wonder if you could lend us another, smaller blanket?’
  1. ‘Excusez-moi.
  1. ‘There. One smaller blanket,’ said the innkeeper.
  1. Then he shut the door, climbed the stairs, got into bed and went to sleep.
  1. But then a bright light woke him up.
  1. Puis une grande lumière l’a éveillé.
  1. ‘That’s all I need!’ said the innkeeper.
  1. ‘Mais c’est pas vrai!’ il a dit.
  1. Then he shut the door,
  1. Puis il a fermé la porte,
  1. Climbed the stairs, drew the curtains, got into bed and went to sleep.
  1. But then there was another knock at the door.
  1. Mais à ce moment-là, on a frappé encore à la porte.
  1. ‘We are three shepherds.’
  1. ‘Nous somme trois bergiers.’
  1. ‘Well, what’s the matter? Lost your sheep?’
  1. ‘Qu’est-ce qui’il y a? Vous avez perdu vos moutons?’
  1. ‘We’ve come to see Mary and Joseph.’
  1. ‘On est venu voir Mary et Joseph.’
  1. ‘ROUND THE BACK’ said the innkeeper.
  1. ‘Dans l’écurie,’ l’aubergier a dit.
  1. Then he shut the door, climbed the stairs,
  1. Got into bed, and went to sleep.
  1. But then there was yet another knock at the door.
  1. ‘We are three kings. We’ve come-’
  1. ‘On est trois rois. On est venu – ‘
  1. ‘ROUND THE BACK!’
  1. ‘DANS L’ECURIE!’
  1. He slammed the door, climbed the stairs,
  1. Got into bed and went to sleep.
  1. But then a chorus of singing woke him up.
  1. ‘RIGHT-THAT DOES IT!’
  1. ‘ÇA SUFFIT!’
  1. SO he got out of bed,
  1. Puis il s’est levé,
  1. Stomped down the stairs,
  1. Threw open the door
  1. Il a ouvert la porte en colère
  1. Went round the back, stormed into the stable and was just about to speak when -
  1. ‘Sssh!’ whispered everybody.
  1. ‘Shhhh!’ Tout le monde a chuchoté
  1. ‘You’ll wake the baby!’
  1. ‘Vous allez éveiller le bébé!’
  1. ‘Baby?’ ’
  1. ‘Bébé?’
  1. asked the innkeeper.
  1. a demandé l’aubergier.
  1. ‘Yes, a baby has this night been born.
  1. ‘Oui, cette nuit un bébé est né.’
  1. ‘Oh?’ said the innkeeper, looking crossly into the manger.
  1. ‘Oh?’ a dit l’aubergier, qui regardait fâché dans la mangeoire.
  1. And just at that moment, suddenly, his anger seemed to fly away.
  1. ‘Oh,’ said the innkeeper, ‘isn’t he lovely!’
  1. ‘Oh, ‘il a dit, ‘Qu’est-ce qu’il est charmant!’
  1. In fact, he thought he was so special, he woke up all the guests at the inn,
  1. So that they could come and have  a look at the baby too.
  1. So no one got much sleep that night!
  1. Personne n’a beaucoup dormi cette nuit-là.
