Welcome to Nursery's class page

What a fun week we have had in Nursery, learning all about firefighters with the help of our story, "Firefighter Ted" who maybe isn't the best firefighter. The children loved joining in with his catchphrase: "No, need to thank me..." 

We put our helping skills to the test when a fledgling pigeon landed in our garden and didn't want to fly away. The children were very sensible and made excellent suggestions about how we could help, including giving it food and water and making sure they were quiet. When we came back after lunch, it had flown away. We were very proud of how we helped. 

We have been working hard on our fine motor skills and drawing horizontal and vertical lines and challenging ourselves with squares. Miss Conyard has also been challenging us with alliteration and finding initial sounds. We've even been trying to form the initial letters in our names. Look out on our work we bring home for them. 

Next week we move onto Postal workers and how they help us. We can't wait to listen to the story of 'The Jolly Postman' and help him deliver letters and parcels to our friends.

School Ready...

Starting school nursery is an exciting milestone, and helping children develop independence before they begin can make the transition smoother and build their confidence. Every child develops at their own pace, but building routines that help children practise everyday self-care and social skills at home can help them feel more settled and ready to learn in a nursery environment. Why not try some of these suggested activities with your child over the Summer. How many can they achieve?

School Readiness Checklist ✓

• Use the toilet independently and wash hands afterwards.
• Put on and take off their coat and shoes with minimal help.
• Recognise and respond to their own name.
• Follow simple instructions, such as "tidy up" or "sit down."
• Feed themselves using a spoon or fork and drink from an open cup.
• Share toys and take turns with others.
• Draw simple pictures/ make marks and talk about what it is. 
• Express basic needs, such as saying 'help me please' or telling an adult when they are thirsty. 
• Separate from a parent or carer with reassurance.
• Help tidy away toys and belongings after play.
• Begin to manage simple routines, such as hanging up their coat or finding their own belongings.
