Welcome to Year One!
Hello Year One team!
We are so excited to get started with our learning this half-term.
This Autumn term in Year One will focus on establishing routines for learning, exploring early number and writing skills and beginning our Guided Reading practice groups. We will utilise some continuous provision aspects to create continuity for the children from their Reception environment.
Reading is a priority in Year One. We will aim to change books every day and children are expected to bring in their reading book and record each day, whether they have read at home or not. This is to ensure the children can access individual reading support at school.
Children are expected to be read with 5 X a week, with their books being changed after they have read them 3 times. This is part of our Little Wandle phonics procedure, ensuring children are secure with graphemes and phonemes before moving on.
We are really looking forward to getting to know our wonderful group of learners this year!

Dino the Travelling Dinosuar
Each week one lucky child will get to take home Dino, our class travelling dinosaur. Feel free to take photos and email them to the office (but no pressure!)... we love to see what the children get up to. This is awarded to the child that gets Pupil of the Week that week.
(Dino is washed routinely, but please lend a hand to keep him looking fresh and return him on Monday).

Home Learning
During the Autumn term, home learning is kept to a minimum, apart from our standard spelling test.
Spelling Test

Children will be given spellings every Monday, which they will be asked to recall the following week. These spellings will reflect the Phonics sounds the children have been practising in class. They will be printed and given in reading records, as well as being published on the website each week.
This is a low pressure way of us understanding how the children are incorporating their Phonics into their written work.
We never share the results with other children but we will record them in their reading records so they can be supported with their practice at home.
As always in Year One- the aim is to improve each week, not to be perfect...!
